Fire at the India plant of the world's largest vaccine manufacturer

A major fire has broken out at a plant being built for the Serum Institute of India (SII), the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, but it will not affect the production of coronavirus vaccines, said a source close to the firm.

Television channels showed a huge cloud of gray smoke on Thursday over the site in Pune, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

IBS is manufacturing millions of doses of a vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca for India and many other low- and middle-income countries.

The company is also preparing to produce a vaccine being developed by the American company Novavax Inc.

Reports said the fire occurred at a construction site at the large facility. The Pune fire department told Reuters news agency that five fire trucks had been dispatched to the site.

There was no immediate news on victims, or on the cause of the fire.

An SII representative did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
