Bangladesh apologizes to Pakistan for committing genocide in 1971

Dhaka on Thursday reiterated his call for Pakistan to offer an official apology for the genocide committed in the 1971 Bangladesh War of Liberation.

The call came while the newly appointed Pakistani High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, was paying a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Md. Shahriar Alam, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a press release.

The deputy minister also reiterated the importance of resolving other outstanding bilateral issues with Pakistan, including finalizing the repatriation of Pakistanis stranded in Bangladesh and solving the asset division problem.

During the meeting, the state minister said that improving relations with all neighboring countries was a foreign policy priority of the government.

"In keeping with that spirit, we look forward to cooperating with Pakistan," he said.

He urged Pakistan to grant access to more Bangladeshi products by utilizing the existing provisions of SAFTA, relaxing the negative list and removing trade barriers as the current trade balance tilts towards Pakistan.

The Pakistani envoy said that he would do due diligence to promote bilateral relations in all possible areas of cooperation. Both parties agreed on the need to hold the long-pending Foreign Relations Consultations, which were last held in 2010.
